Using IFTTT To Expand Your Snapchat Reach

Are you using Snapchat? If you’re one of the over 150 million people using Snapchat everyday, you might be happy to find out that you can grow your reach with simple automations that can be set up in minutes using the popular tool IFTTT (If This Then That).

What Can You Do With Snapchat & IFTTT?

When you set up an IFTTT account (free) you can connect your Snapchat photos folder on your phone (iOS or Android) and then go nearly anywhere with them!

Snapchat to…where?

Here’s an example.

Let’s say that you wanted to update your Instagram feed with your Snapchats.

Instead of taking a screenshot of your own Snapchat, or saving the picture and then reuploading to your Instagram account after opening the app and doing all the detail work, you can set up an IFTTT “applet” (these used to be called “recipes”) to automatically post for you!

This means you just use Snapchat and the rest is taken care of for you.

Where else can you automate Snapchat?

There’s more than just Instagram, so what else is possible?

Well, here’s some more great examples of places that you can syndicate your content to using IFTTT:

• Twitter – create an automatic tweet based on your Snapchat
• Facebook – update your timeline and post from your Snapchats
• Evernote
• Reddit
• WordPress
• Tumblr
• Email
• Slack channel
• So much more – it’s up to you!

How Do I Actually Set This Up?

Here’s the trick.

While you can’t connect Snapchat directly in IFTTT, you CAN connect Google Photos (or iOS photos – but Google Photos works on both iOS and Android, so we’re using that for this example).

You’ll need to first get your Snapchats saved to your phone…if you’re not sure if you’re already doing that, or need to know how, Gizmodo has a good guide here: http://fieldguide.gizmodo.com/how-to-back-up-all-your-snapchat-photos-1785837385

Then, you’ll need to create a Dropbox folder for your Snaps. Lastly, create an applet to take your Snaps from that Dropbox folder…to anywhere! You can also use Google Drive, and many other storage options.

Right now, it cannot be totally automated, but it’s close and this way you retain control over what’s shared.

Just click “save” on your Snap, then move the ones you want to share to your Dropbox or Google Drive folder and let IFTTT do the rest.
